Column: For The People

By ARGOSY NAZARENO

Pro populo means “for the people.” I only write things that matter or would benefit the people. I am inclined to say about certain issues that involve the marginalized, oppressed and intimidated sectors of our society. I do not write for glory or fame. I do this with the intention of being heard, calling the attention of the rich and famous, for them to finally listen and accommodate the needs of the poor.

Majority of the people that I encounter everyday do not really read English newspapers. They just browse the pages looking for interesting sections or articles. They are telling me that they do not understand English articles that much that is why they are fond of reading “Bisaya” newspapers or tabloids. Although I am not good like my father, I am trying my best to use simple terms and explain a chosen topic taking into consideration the capacity of the common reader. I am aiming for an understandable and simple article. The gist of an issue is enough.

Generalizing, I can say that people belonging to the middle and upper class are the ones reading English newspapers. This is my primary reason why I keep on writing, hoping to be noticed by the elite, bringing to them subjects that need to be settled. I am certain that rich people know, of course they do, who are professionals and educated, about the realities here in Bohol. So why do I keep on blabbing even if they already know? It is to remind them again and again. Because it seems that many questions need answers. That the minimum wage should be met, etc. Please do not ignore the plea of an ordinary worker while you keep enriching yourselves. All that I’m asking is, do not be blind or deaf to the plight of the people especially with regards to their labor rights. Ironically, these professionals and bosses are using all means for the purpose of circumventing the law. They will be using their wealth and influence to stop their political friends from passing legislations that could jeopardize their business interest. They are capable of hiring the best lawyers, twisting rules and guidelines, evading complaints and lawsuits.

You may be reading the contents of this newspaper while relaxing outside your majestic house drinking expensive coffee or imported tea while your workers are sweating while working for you, sadly underpaid.

True and strong political will is needed, as some of the officials are tied to their close friends and relatives who happen to be Bohol’s Economic tycoons.

There is still hope, but when? We will continue the struggle for fairness.

I will continue, pro populo!

Thanks a lot for the helpful write-up. It is also my opinion that mesothelioma cancer has an really long latency period of time, which means that symptoms of the disease might not emerge till 30 to 50 years after the initial exposure to mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, which is the most common variety and has effects on the area round the lungs, could potentially cause shortness of breath, breasts pains, as well as a persistent cough, which may bring on coughing up body.
